Therefore we, the People of Malaysia, hereby solemnly pledge to concentrate all our strengths and effort, in order to achieve these aspirations, ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING PRINCIPLES.

And I would still go for 'loyalty' over 'fealty', as the latter is used more of a vassal's faith to its lord, and the former more a citizen's faith to its ruler.

I understand and agree that 'fealty' is indeed a more powerful word.

But it is stronger in the same way that, say, 'supplication' is a stronger word than 'submission'. But the former is used of a slave's relationship to its master, while the latter can be used of a freeman.

We are not slaves submitting to a foreign government that has submitted our sovereignty to its rule; rather, we are the free citizens of a country whose sovereignty we freely make ourselves subject to.
