Shining.

The night is still, the moon newly rising,
The people sleep tightly, not very surprising.
Out slips a shadow, no sound under boot,
What mischief one wonders, could possibly be afoot.
He darts, so quick, from corner to corner,
He lingers mere moments, not one second longer.
A light shines down, startling him as he goes,
He should be more careful, that’s certain he knows.
He sees his desire, locks target in sight,
Draws tight, his cloak about him, as he fades in the night.
Tapping once, tapping twice, no answer he gets,
Warm flesh to cold stone, for a moment, he tries to forget.
A stairwell he finds, and with a breath, carefully descends,
The maw gapes wide, be brave he pretends.
A match is struck to lamp, so feeble the light,
Imbues him with strength, however little the might.
Hand on wall, tensed, he progresses within,
The labyrinth it beckons, the trial begins.
The silence, it deafens, the roar he does hear,
How can one so weak, possibly allay, the darkest of fears.
The candle burns low, his pulse skips a beat,
Do his ears deceive him, or was that shuffle of feet.
He quickens his pace, adrenaline does surge,
“Be strong my faint heart, this evil we must purge!”
On and on he does trod, distance unmeasured,
Into the very depths of hell would he venture, to recover the treasured.
The tunnel, it widens, with a fleeting glance he sees,
“Oh Lord”, he breath catches, “how can this be”.
Fading light, he raises, above his head high,
Stares at the sight before him, as it gets lost in the sky.
Out goes the flame, as if blown by unholy breath,
“Face me” he shouts, “I fear, neither you nor death”.
Silence but greets him, blind he may well be,
He draws his sword, more for comfort, the need for familiarity.
Knowing the cause is futile, knowing demise must verily await,
His spirit he does harden, his back he holds straight.
A prayer he mouths, as he slides to one knee,
“My Father in heaven, my soul I commend to Thee”.
Trembling , hand before him, he rises, and feels his way through,
Into the depths he whispers, “Remember my beloved, this, I do for you”.
